How does your garden grow?
Some of you may remember that back in mid-July I planted a garden. I thought I’d give a little update on the garden’s progress.
This is what we started with:
Now we’ve got some of these:
And these (cherry tomatoes):
It’s hard to get a good shot because of the lay-out of the garden, but the tomatoes are about three feet high now, we have peas, carrots, and lettuce from seeds. Potatoes are growing, there are herbs and kale taking it slow but definitely getting there.
I also started from seed three planters full of herbs that are growing on our back porch, parsley, oregano, and two kinds of basil (on of which is supposed to be purple, but I think I was misled as it’s more like green with a few purple spots).

We’ve got a couple heirloom apple trees in our “yard”, only one has any apples this year, it’s a pippen, and makes really tasty, crunch apples.
Our land-lord recently planted a magenta bougainvillea, which has such a vibrant color it makes me happy just to look at it.
Soon we shall harvest our first food, we’ll be having a salad from our garden in the next couple of days!

Awesome garden.
That sounds like Thai basil. Nate planted an herb garden this summer consisting of Thai basil, cilantro and rosemary. Oh and some catnip. Sadly some hot weather killed off the cilantro and took a toll on the catnip. when my family lived in California, my father attempted to grow all of our food in the yard. He had two huge gardens. Green beans should also be pretty easy to cultivate there as well as sugar snap peas. We always had a lot of both as well as corn, tomatoes, squash, eggplant, carrots… oh and that garlic that he planted ONE of that threatened to take over.
I’m considering ordering some Japanese seeds to try to cultivate some of the things I go to the Japanese farm’s stand at the farmers market for. His stuff is amazing!
Well done. You’ve got a greener thumb than I do. Although our herbs are starting off pretty strong, so fingers crossed.
Oh go you!! Your garden looks so colorful! My black thumb can barely make a little regular plant grow.
Nice, April! My gardening has slowed down quite a bit since we had Kyle, but we do have a glorious grape tomato plant this year. Kyle (18 months) loves to pick tomatoes and eat them every day. He calls them apples – apple is one of the few words he can say. So fun to see him with tomato juice squirting down his chin. We had a beautiful zucchini plant that broke off half-way through summer and our eggplants haven’t done anything – too cool this summer! They turned the old Sinclair station at the corner of Dix and West Main into a neat flower/fresh produce shop. We stop there quite a bit to stock up on things. Plus mom and dad have a big garden at my grandparents’ farm. Enjoy all your produce!
