I know what you mean about the advice. God-forbid you do something different from someone else. They just give you that withering look like "You are not treating your child right." I actually get that with my puppy, for crying out loud. I guess I'm glad that everyone is more concerned about the treatment of children and animals, but come on already!!! Good for you to just delete snarky advice. Wish I could do that IRL, in real life.

AFM: Surprised us too! They HAD to: put salve in baby's eyes, weigh baby, measure baby, give baby bath, test baby's blood sugar (three times, and then another time later because a different nurse didn't believe a baby could be that big and not diabetic), give baby shots even though I asked them not to, and other stuff I didn't even know what they were doing. I got to hold her for a few minutes then they whisked her off for that myriad of things before they would let me have her to breast-feed, I was not amused, but having had an epidural, I couldn't exactly get up and demand they give her to me. Next time, if possible, we're going to a birthing center not a hospital. It was the farthest thing from a restful place that I can imagine.

Good advices. The doula thing surprised me. I guess that's one of the flaws of the American system. Neither in Britain nor Australia did we feel like we needed an advocate in the delivery room. We had lovely midwives whose primary purpose was making sure that everything went well for us. I don't think we could have gotten rid of the baby!

Fabulous!!! Thank you so much for posting this, April; I know I will come back and read it again and again. Btw, what were the two books that you recommended two book clubs ago? I think they were on parenting?
